为了得到美国全国主要出生缺陷的出生患病率，美国疾病控制中心利用11个州（阿拉巴马，阿肯色，加利福尼亚，乔治亚，夏威夷，爱荷华，马萨诸塞，北卡罗莱纳，俄克拉荷马，德克萨斯以及犹他州）1999～2001年出生缺陷监测系统所确诊的18种主要缺陷的平均出生患病率和1999～2001年全国总活产数，对美国全国的各种出生缺陷的出生患病率和年出生患儿数进行了估计。神经管畸形由于先前已经报道过，因而没有包括在内。在对全国的出生缺陷（除外染色体性缺陷）出生患病率和年出生患儿数进行估计时，对种族（非西班牙裔白人、非西班牙裔黑人、西班牙裔、其他）进行了调整；由于母亲年龄与染色体异常性缺陷密切相关，因此，在对唐氏综合征、13三体综合征和18三体综合征进行估计时，对母亲的年龄（<35岁和=35岁）作了调整。如一名新生儿患有两种或以上缺陷，在各类缺陷组别中分别计算一次。表1是所估计的美国全国1999～2001年6大类18种缺陷的出生患病率和年出生患儿数。
